Progressive MS
Progressive MS is characterized by a continuous worsening of symptoms, independant of relapes. Progressive MS can be divided into two categories:
- Primary progressive MS occurs when the disease is progressive from the beginning. This affects about 15% of people with MS.
- Secondary progressive MS (SPMS) is characterized by a steady worsening of symptoms. Relapsing-remitting MS can progress insidiously over time and develop into SPMS.
How does multiple sclerosis progress?
- Relapsing-remitting MS can progress silently into secondary progressive MS (SPMS).
- Key characteristic: slow deterioration of symptoms regardless of relapses.
- SPMS still affects a significant proportion of patients. However, thanks to early detection and modern therapies, the onset of a SPMS can be delayed.
To determine if your MS is progressing, look for a worsening or new onset of the following symptoms.
